Aug. 1st, 2009 05:01 pmRepost from last year
We've hit one of the really strange times in my family each year. The first is in June-20th was an aunt's birthday, 21st was mine, 22nd was an uncle. This time it's a mix of happy and sad.
Today would have been my grandfathers birthday. I never met him, he died when Mom was 9, and he was about 64.
Burt was born in England in 1874. he came to the US, leaving behind family and title, at the age of 25. He was married 3 times, my grandmother being the last. He and wife #1 adopted a boy-Lloyd. #2 was a Countess, the marriage lasted only a few years. In 1904 he was living in Southern California near cousins, and was at their house the night my grandmother was born. They were 30 years apart in age, and when she became an adult they dated, marrying when she was 21 and he was 51. They had 3 children-Bertram, Wayne and Jeannine. Shortly after Bert was born his family in England contacted him, stating that his father had died and that as the oldest son he had inherited the family title and properties. All he had to do was leave the US, and his commoner wife. He refused, staying with Grandma until he died in 1938. My grandmother never dated or remarried.
