I need a soapbox moment before I take off. Feel free to skip, or not.

I'm following the Olympics in print only. Just so you know

Article from Yahoo news:

Cuban Tae Kwon Do athlete banned after kicking ref

Not copying the whole article, but go look if you need the full info.

1-This sport is about to be removed from Olympic contention already. Everyone that chose to compete signed a waiver this year promising no controversy and to keep things calm. Don't rock the boat.

2-This is the second problem I've read so far, the other was yesterday concerning a different competitor.

3-There are rules in TKD that must be followed, just like any other sport. Time limits are one of those.

Okay, so he felt he needed more than the one minute alloted by the federation. That's why he has an instructor/coach with him, to call a time out. His instructor didn't do his job.

I read that the other competitor felt the man had a broken toe and couldn't go on. People, broken toes, fingers and noses are a common thing in martial arts. tape your toes so they don't break before you compete. It's standard practice. You can still have something happen, but it's much less likely. Suck it up, get off your duff, and finish the match. That's the way it is. if you aren't able to continue for any reason then the official is right to end the match and award it to the other person. You know this by any training and matches you have ever been in. What made this one different? Because it's the Olympics? No, same sport, same rules.

I'm honestly shocked by these actions. I've followed martial arts, and especially TKD for 15 years faithfully. I have children that are trained and have competed to first places many times. Some days with blood streaming from a broken nose, once with a break to a toe because my son felt he was too good to need the tape. He was wrong. But he finished his match and then got treatment. Know what treatment is for a broken toe? Tape it to the ones next to it. (big toe excepted)

So a heartfelt thank you to the authorities of the TKD Federation for enforcing the rules, for banning this man and his coach, and for keeping the integrity of the Federation intact. However, I'd have liked it much better had they kept his records in the Olympics for this year. As a lesson to be learned for future athletes of any competition of how not to act and the consequences of your actions.
